Dick4Dick
Since its beginning D4D immediately arrived as one of the most original and innovative phenomenon of the Polish music scene. At first perceived as a parodic group of performers [read - smart ass art school kids], it transformed into a self-sufficient collective, able to produce albums, videos, posters. They organize gigs and run a leading recording studio. Each consecutive album astonished their fans by the depth and breadth of the compositions and the constant changes of genre. All these have given D4D the status of real alternative star.
It all started at September 2003 with group of friends: Adam Hryniewicki, Krystian Wolowski, Maciek Szupica and Michał „Bunio“ Skrok where they were invited to perform in a small festival Culture Shaffland in Bendorf (Germany). They already had common ground and experience in creating musical projects: Adam and Krystian known by their jazz-core duo Trismegistos and with Bunio they lead the avant-pop Temporary Internet Files. In Bendorf they were invited as an art group called Uniform where Maciek was in charge of video production. Finding that festival rather boring, they decided to dream up the new band which they would like to listen to. The names and aliases were conceived immediately. From now on Dick4Dick consist of: Dick Dexter (Adam), Nygga Dick (Krystian), Wet Dick Jr (Maciek) and Bobby Dick (Michal). All of them lived and work in Gdansk.
For the next few months to come, apart from a few dj sets on which the guys tried to mix electronic tracks with evergreens (they always aimed to pop), not much has happened. Then in March 2004, they were booked for their first concert. During the course of one month they cooked up some electro-covers (AC/DC or Depeche Mode) and several original hits (eg. Technology). A month later, in April, they performed their first show in Ucho club in Gdynia. Seeing them for the first time people went berserk. Knowing this, our Fab Four decided not to wait for popularity – they went for it and grabbed it for themselves. Through the rest of the year, D4D booked a number of gigs and become quite popular in clubs around Poland. They started to be part of a fresh and curious electroclash scene.
By 2005 they were already established and well-known in the underground music scene. Rumours spread that D4D gave stunning live performances. Gigs were fuelled with joyful anarchy. The boys were performing in strange suits, raw make up, throwing themselves into crazed audiences covered by kefir and fake money. Music was only one of the many elements of the creative work. The concerts attracted plenty of sexually crazed young female fans and Dicks posed as machos from the outer space. The performance aspect of their shows became even a detriment to them later on, as D4D had to convince the people that they’re much more than a novelty act, and in fact nothing less than of the most important phenomenon of alternative scene.
